General Assembly Refuses to Consider Marriage Amendment

Unfortunately, this is a report we could write every day for the past six years. The leadership of the North Carolina General Assembly refuses to consider any of the bills that have been introduced to allow the voters to decide if they would like to protect marriage by approving an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution. We have talked several times with House Speaker Joe Hackney (D–Orange County), and he listens and asks a few questions.

Senate Bill Puts Marriage at Risk

For the first time in history, on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 the North Carolina Senate voted to add the terms "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to state law. By a vote of 25–22, Senate Bill 526–School Violence Prevention Act, sponsored by Sen. Julia Boseman (D-New Hanover), passed 2nd reading. The final Senate vote is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6.

NC House Passes HB 88: Preserving Respect for Marriage, Not "Committed Relationships"

On Thursday this week, the House of Representatives votes 62 to 52 to adopt HB 88—Healthy Youth Act. This watered-down version of the bill is intended to radically change our State laws govening sex education in North Carolina public schools.

The End of Abstinence—the Beginning of Respect for "Committed Relationships"

Today, HB 88 passed its first vote in the House by 64 to 53. Tomorrow, it will be voted on a second and final time by the House. If it passes, it then goes to the Senate for consideraiton.

This radical bill will change the entire premise of sex education in North Carolina from abstinence-until-marriage to comprehensive sex education. It requires that ALL forms of FDA-approved contraception be taught to our children, promoting the use of condoms, without adequately explaining the risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases that condoms won’t prevent.

Iowa Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex "Marriage"

On Friday, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously struck down as unconstitutional that state’s marriage law. Iowa’s Defense of Marriage Act is similar to North Carolina’s; it defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman, the definition that has existed throughout the state’s history.

Equality North Carolina’s Lobby Day Puts a Face on Traditional Marriage Supporters

The Elon Poll Supports Passing a Marriage Amendment

Yesterday, Elon University released a poll that was widely reported as indicating that support for a Marriage Amendment is waning. But, that characterization is untrue. Careful analysis of the Elon Poll proves that it actually shows an overwhelming support for passing a Marriage Amendment in North Carolina.

Counter Homosexual Activists This Week!

On Tuesday, March 24, homosexual activists will converge on the State Capitol to urge their lawmakers to support equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer members of our State. The all-day lobbying event, known as the “Day of Action,” is sponsored by Equality North Carolina, the state’s largest homosexual advocacy group.

Part of a Larger Agenda

Homosexual activists in our state are seeking equality in many different arenas—education, hate crimes, and housing—but not marriage, at least not yet. Because they are keenly aware that North Carolina is a southern state driven by values that are still conservative and tied to faith, homosexual activists are not presently pressing overtly for marriage equality, or legalization of same-sex marriage. But they are setting the stage for that by creating special rights for homosexuals.
