The End of Abstinence—the Beginning of Respect for "Committed Relationships"
Today, HB 88 passed its first vote in the House by 64 to 53. Tomorrow, it will be voted on a second and final time by the House. If it passes, it then goes to the Senate for consideraiton.
This radical bill will change the entire premise of sex education in North Carolina from abstinence-until-marriage to comprehensive sex education. It requires that ALL forms of FDA-approved contraception be taught to our children, promoting the use of condoms, without adequately explaining the risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases that condoms won’t prevent.
Current law requires teaching “that a mutually faithful monogamous heterosexual relationship in the context of marriage is the best lifelong means of avoiding sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.” HB 88 repeals this provision and instead requires teaching our children "respect for marriage and committed relationships." This requirement equates marriage to homosexual relationships and other forms of unmarried relationships. This is just plain wrong! Our marriage laws do not equate marriage to homosexual or unmarried relationships, and neither should our schools. Children deserve to be protected from such unhealthy teaching.
This bill is being advanced by Planned Parenthood and its ally Equality North Carolina, the radical lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lobbying group. Both groups have pushed this bill to fulfill their larger goals—the legitimization of homosexual behavior and the perpetuation of "reproductive freedom" (abortion).
If you want to stop this bill from bringing to our public schools the promotion of sexual behavior and homosexual relationships, then contact your legislators before 1:00 pm tomorrow, April 16th! This is our last opportunity to stop the bill from being passed by the House. Click here to ask your House member to vote NO on HB 88.
